New York, Queens native Lil Tecca shares his recent single titled, “Need Me”. The song samples “The Boy is Mine”, by Brandy and Monica from the “Never Say Never” album. “Need Me” is the lead single for Tecca’s upcoming 2023 album which he hinted to in a recent tweet stating “album this summer”. The record has received mixed reviews on social media.
The R&B instrumental compliments Lil Tecca’s melodic vocals as well as the propulsive layered drums of the record lay the basis for a catchy hook to match. The accompanying Omar Jones directed visual effectively communicates the vibe of the single and allows Tecca to do what he does best on camera, shine like a star.
At a time where the climate of hip hop has begun to call into question the validity of street culture and gang affiliations, an artist like Lil Tecca has an opportunity to allow his brand some breathing room for growth, as the brand aesthetics of street credentials begin to reduce in value.
As more criminal indictments are handed down and more rappers who can’t seem to stay out of the streets and just make music, find themselves behind bars, the idea of street politics in the music industry will die off. When the streets die, the real recording artists like Lil Tecca will live on, grow and continue to prosper. “Need Me” is a stiff breeze of fresh air from an artist with a bright future. Maybe it’s time to do some spring cleaning on your playlist and add Lil Tecca, after all he did say that you “Need Me”.
